Square 4to. 10.25 x 10.15 inches. 30 + [3] + 1a -39a pp. plates. Bound in pictorial laminated boards. A little wear to extremities and light sunning of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 79 Pages of separately paginated colour plates, with captions. The encounter with the creations of primitive and tribal art in the early twentieth century had a profound significance for western artists. The plates in this study juxtapose works produced by exotic cultures with the paintings and sculptures of over thirty modern artists. The preceding text examines the rejuvenating influences of these remote artefacts upon the modern masters and enquires to what extent the obvious formal inspiration corresponded to kindred spiritual experiences. Originally published as Moderne und primitive Kunst, 1974, based on an exhibition.
