Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. x + 310 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated by 16 pages of black and white photographic plates. Autobiography of Nigel Nicolson (1917-2004), the second son of Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West. The book is arranged according to the various aspects of his life. He relates his encounters with the friends of his parents in the Bloomsbury set, his travels, wartime service overseas as an officer in the Grenadier Guard, his period as Tory MP for Bournemouth East, 1952-59, which ended as his views moved increasingly to the left, and his career as a publisher (Weidenfeld and Nicolson). As a biographer Nicolson wrote a famous account of the marriage of his parents and edited Harold's diaries and the letters of Virginia Woolf.
