Item Description

32 x 36 inches. Engraved map (printed area 800 x 820mm). Black ink on ivory-coloured silk, by David Evans of Crayford.

The circle shown in the centre of the map reflects the limited area of the London Postal Delivery, and also refers to the new Act of Parliament allowing Hackney Carriage Drivers to charge extra beyond the circle's perimeter.

Notes

Not in Howgego. We have traced a copy in the Victoria and Albert Museum, but it appears to be slightly different. Very rare.

Welch and Margetson did not produce maps of London normally. They were an upper class gentleman's outfitters who probably produced this as a novelty and advertising ploy.
