Authoritative biography of the great philosopher, John Locke (1632-1704), by Roger Woolhouse (b.1940), Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of York. It examines the development of Locke's ideas and philosophy, in the theory of knowledge, medicine, science, politics religion and economics against the historical background of Civil War, religious intolerance, anti-government struggle and plots and the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89, after which he was able to return from five years exile in Holland and the United Provinces. Earlier he had spent three and a half years in France, 1675-79.
