Following an initial chapter on the conjuror's dress and contrivances, the text surveys various appliances, including the magic wand, with numerous chapters on tricks with watches, rings, handkerchiefs, flags, gloves, eggs and hats, etc. This enlarged edition contains additional chapters on New Miscellaneous Tricks and on recollections of Hartz the Wizard (Joseph Michael Harz 1836-1903, a famous Vaudeville conjuror). The author, born John Lewis Angelo (1839-1919) used the pseudonym, Professor Hoffmann, because of his profession as a lawyer. His most famous book was Magic Tricks (1876), which had three successors, including this title. Later Magic was first published in 1903 and in new editions in 1911 and 1925, this copy being a reprint of the latter. Hoffmann was considered to be the foremost writer on magic of his time.
