Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 7.75 inches. xxiv + 288 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt with gilt block of decorative roundel enclosing author's initials on front board. Deckled edges. Minor wear to extremities fly leaves browned and edges foxed; otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial book plate of Arthur Rau, 1922. Decorated by publisher's device on verso of half title. According to Hardy, half of these poems were recent and the other half written earlier. Some pay tribute to his friend Horace Moule and his first and second wives, Emma and Florence. Often the poems take a musical shape, recalling the past in ballad format, resulting in many having been later set to music.
