FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORMAT. Large 8vo. 6.75 X 10 inches. [2] + [ii] + 291 + [1] pp. + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders to boards; spine in compartments decorated gilt with gilt titles. Deckled edges. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Bookseller's label of R. R. Bellamy, Bridge Street, Burton on Trent, on front pastedown. Illustrated with 18 hand-coloured aquatint plates, drawn by Rowlandson, including frontispiece. Originally issued in parts in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1817-20. A translation by William Combe, (1741-1823) of the best known work of the German satirical author, August Moritz von Thummel (1738-1817). It was published as Reise in die Mittaglichen Provinzen von Frankreich im Jahre 1785-1786. Splendidly illustrated by the eighteen aquatint plates of Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827).
