Notes
Captain Richard Alexander Cruise (1784?-1832) was in charge of the military detachment of about sixty soldiers, on board the Dromedary, fitted out as a naval store ship. She was to transport 369 convicts from the Sheerness and Spithead hulks to Van Diemen's Land and New South Wales and then proceed to New Zealand in search of large timber spars to use as topmasts. In Australia they took on board nine high ranking ' New Zealanders,' returning to their own land. The book is written in the form of a diary and includes numerous passages relating encounters with the Maori people, with a longer description of them in the Remarks section at the end. A second edition of this work was published in 1824.
