Item Description

4to. 9.75 x 11 inches. 240 pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. A fine copy. Illustrated throughout in colour and sepia, including portrait frontispiece. Decorated by half title vignette. The first major study of the work of John Armstrong (1893-1973), born in Hastings, who was primarily a realist painter with a strong metaphysical and allegorical slant, with forays into abstract and surrealist pictures. He lived in London, Essex (including work as a war artist), and Cornwall and produced work for the GPO and ICI as well as designing distinctive posters for Shell. Essays on his life and work by art writer and critic, Andrew Lambirth, precede a catalogue of 892 works by the artist and a chronology.
