The second volume of the author's trilogy, this title continues the story of Out of the Smoke and follows the survivors of H.M.A.S Perth into Japanese captivity, where the prisoners are put to work on the Burma-Siam Railway. He distracts himself by observing and sketching nature as well as his fellow captives. It includes an appendix on Medical Experiences in Japanese Captivity by Lieut.-Col. E. E. Dunlop, M.S., F.R.C.S., Parkin's commander. Ray Parkin (1910-2005) was an Australian writer, amateur artist and historian.
