Notes

Works of political economy under the guise of fiction, a genre pioneered by Harriet Martineau (1802-76). Regarded as a founder of sociology, she was among the first social theorist to examine household economy, women, marriage, children, religious life and race. Illustrations of Political Economy was published in nine volumes, 1832-34 and proved to be a great publishing success, even outselling Dickens. It is considered that it helped to spread the free market ideas of Adam Smith throughout the British Empire.
