Notes

A standard survey of English social history, first published as English Social History, in the US and Canada, in 1942 and in Britain in 1944. The four volume illustrated edition was first published, 1949-52. George Macaulay Trevelyan (1876-1962) was Regius Professor of History at the University of Cambridge, 1927-43. The original English Social History, which from a perspective of Britain in wartime, provided a nostalgic view of the country's past, was his last history book, and turned out to be his best selling title.
