Identifying Antique British Silver.
Square 4to. 10.5 x 10.5 inches. 327 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in dust wrapper. Slight sunning of spine and adjoining board edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by black and white photographs, facsimiles and hallmarks. Decorated by half title and title page vignettes. This book demonstrates the it is not sufficient merely to check the hallmarked date letter of a piece of silverware to ascertain its value. It is the maker's mark that is crucial to correct identification of a valuable piece. This volume by a retired silver dealer with more than forty years experience in the trade, is the only one to provide a detailed A-Z list of the marks of all reasonably well known makers and also lists the date letters of all the important British assay offices. It too examines authentic design features, the placing of marks and descriptions of styles of ornament, all helping the reader to identify the precise origins of a piece of silver.
