Large 4to. 8.5 x 12.75 inches. [10], including preface and index to Premiere Partie + 360 pp.; Seconde Partie, with separate half title, 197 pp. + [3] pp. index. Text in double columns. Title page in red and black. Text in French. Bound in half morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands with contrasting morocco title label, gilt. Engraved title foxed and laid on to another sheet of paper, fore edge re-margined. A very good copy. Armourial bookplate of Alexander Meyrick Broadley Illustrated by 33 copperplates, double page and folding of which 13 are plates, including engraved title and 20 maps. Copy lacks portrait of the Prince opposite p.1. Decorated by device on title page, by endpiece vignettes and by initials. The life of Frederic Henry of Nassau, Prince of Orange and Stadholder of five Dutch provinces (1584-1647), who was the successful military leader against the Spanish in the last phase of the Dutch war of independence during the period 1627-46. The work, by the Dutch historian, Isaac Commelin (1598-1676) was originally published in Dutch, 1651. It is illustrated by some spectacular plates, including a view of the defeat of the Spanish by the Dutch fleet at The Battle of the Downs, 1639. This copy was owned by Alexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916), barrister and book collector, of The Knapp, Bradpole, Dorset.
