Bound in eighteenth century vellum with black titles on spine. All edges gilt. Title page is dust soiled and a few lower margin stains at end; otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of George Forbes. Decorated by title page device, head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. Parallel Latin and Greek texts of the three works traditionally ascribed to the Early Greek poet, Hesiod (active 750-650 BC: Works and Days, The Shield of Heracles (now considered to be spurious) and Theogeny (of the birth of the gods). This 1657 edition, printed by Elzevir of Amsterdam, and prefaced by a life of Hesiod, was edited by the Dutch physician and classical scholar, Cornelis Schrevel (1608-64), physician and classical scholar of the University of Leiden, with acknowledgements to the previous work of Georgius Pasor (1570-1637), classical and Hebrew scholar. The book was formerly owned by a member of the Scottish Forbes family.
