8vo. 7.5 x 9.5 inches. 112 pp. In pictorial card wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white, including frontispiece. Well illustrated account of the career and work of the Dutch avant garde artist, typographer and printer, Henrik Nicolaas Werkman (1882-1945), by Alston W. Purvis (b.1943), graphic designer of Boston University College of Fine Art. During the German occupation, Werkman established a clandestine printing house. He was executed by a Gestapo firing squad three days before the liberation of his home city of Groningen was liberated. In the course of this battle much of his work was destroyed.
