Sainsbury (see list of contributors) former owner of book, on House of Lords note paper and black and white photographic print of the Battle of San Domingo, 1806.

The selection of naval battle scenes and portraits is based on paintings and prints held in the Gunroom at Dartmouth. Each account of the twenty five battles, from 897 to 1982, is by a different author, except that two are by the editor. A further fourteen actions are described in Appendix A and the Royal Naval College in Appendix B.
