FIRST EDITION. 4to, in eights. 7.5 x 10.75 inches. [4] + vi + [2] + 1155 pp. + 24 pp. Annexe and advertisements. Title page in red and black. Text in French. Bound in original black half morocco over green cloth; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. A little wear to extremities, fading of edges and some scattered foxing, including fly leaves; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 2 portrait frontispieces. Decorated by printer's colophon on verso of half title, device on title page, head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. The last published work of the famous French writer, Alexandre Dumas (1802-70), which appeared after his death because of the Franco-Prussian War. He was himself a gourmet and skilled cook: ' Dumas ?tait un beau mangeur, comme il ?tait un beau conteur' (Preface signed by L. T.). The main part of this immense volume is an alphabetical combination of dictionary and cookbook, preceded by a long letter of Dumas to the French critic and writer, Jules Janin (1804-74). At the end are eight menus from the Caf? Anglais and an Annexe, including the author's Study on Mustard. First edition of a work which has appeared in numerous later editions, abridgements and English translations.
