Item Description

4to. 9.75 x 12 inches. xxxvii + [i] + 263 + [1] pp. Bound in original half leather over dark brown watered boards with blind stamped block of Admiralty badge on front, spine partly rebacked, in compartments with gilt band, block of gilt fouled anchor and No. 223 at base of spine, with contrasting black morocco title label, gilt. Text pages cut away to display index tags. Three leaflets of Orders in Council, 1881, 1884 (10, 2,2 pp. with Bermuda Dockyard stamps and manuscript note) bound in at front. Loosely inserted; 1896 manuscript, [2] p. folded, referring to loan of old General Signal Book. A little wear to extremities, browning of index tags and occasional foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by diagram, text figure and coloured signal flags. Decorated by Admiralty badge on title page. Scarce surviving example of a nineteenth century Royal Navy signals book, a title which was frequently revised, with the likely discarding of superseded editions.
