FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 7.5 inches. [ii] + 12 pp. In green stiff card boards with red titles. Minor wear to extremities, sunning of spine, and spotting of edges; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1948 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 16 colour plates, including 2 frontispieces. Decorated by title page and verso and endpiece vignettes. Robert Gathorne-Hardy (1902-1973) was a poet, novelist, biographer and botanist, the son of Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 3rd Earl of Cranbrook and educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He collected plants from around the world and was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1960. His text describes flower illustrators, including Mrs Jane Loudon (1807-58), whose plates are taken from some of her gardening manuals, which she wrote for a largely female readership.
