Account of an adventurous journey across Sinkiang and Chinese Central Asia to Srinagar in Kashmir, by Ella Maillart (1903-97), born in Geneva. The Swiss sportswoman, adventurer, travel writer and photographer had previously travelled across the Muslim republics of the USSR. She made the Chinese journey with Peter Fleming (1907-71), who recounted it in News from Tartary, and whom she had met when he was a Times correspondent in Manchuria. A first reprint, translated from the French of Oasis Interdites, of a work which appeared in several later editions, and strikingly illustrated by the author's own photographs.
