The first version of this work of collective biography appeared in 1831 and was translated into Welsh under the title, Enwogion Cymru. This is the expanded English edition of 1852, which also contains a section of Additions at the end. Robert Williams (1810-81), antiquary and scholar of Welsh and Cornish. was educated at Oxford and held a number of Welsh livings, before becoming Rector of Culmington, Herefordshire in 1879, having been an honorary canon of St Asaph since 1872.
