8vo. 7.75 x 5.25 inches. [2] + xxii + [ii] + 269 pp. + 32 pp. Publisher's catalogue. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing decorative block on boards. Some wear to extremities, including small split at head of spine. A little spotting of flyleaves and preliminaries, but otherwise a very good copy. A few early ink notes and early signature on half title. An influential work which gave an impetus to the study of logic in Britain and the US. First published in book form in 1826, it appeared in numerous editions in both countries by a variety of publishers. Richard Whately (1787-1863), philosopher, economist and theologian, was ordained in Oxford in 1814, and was Professor of Political Economy, from 1829 until appointed to the post of Archbishop of Dublin in the Anglican Church of Ireland in 1831.
