Decorated by title page and headpiece vignettes and by publisher's device. Biography of Edward Lear (1812-88), famous poet of nonsense verse for children, watercolourist and traveller. His diaries, letters and paintings recounted his journeys in Italy, Greece, Albania, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine and India. The author quotes from his writings, describes many of his sketches and watercolours, and provides a critical analysis of some of Lear's classic poems. Peter Levi (1931-2008) was a poet, translator, biographer, travel writer and former Jesuit, resigning the priesthood to marry in 1977. He was Professor of Poetry at Oxford, 1984-89.
