Dr Joan Thirsk (1922-2013), sometime Reader in Economic History in the University of Oxford, was a leading economic and social historian, specialising in agricultural history, and from 1974 served as general editor of The Agrarian History of England and Wales. This volume examines the development of industry and commerce in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which fostered the growth of a consumer society in England. The two appendices supply statistics of London imports in 1559 and 1564-65 and exports, 1662-63.
