Notes

A colourful record of the secular carnivals (Fastnachtspiele) which were developing in the free imperial city of Nuremberg in the second half of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The plates illustrate principally costumes but also depict water castles, boats, dragons and other floats as well as wheeled boats and a windmill. The costume pages also show coats of arms. One of the authors of these Fastnacht games was Hans Folz (1535/40 -1513). This new edition, with hand coloured lithographic plates, was edited by Karl Drescher (1854-1925), an academic teacher of German language and literature.
