Vol. I, ix + [i] 324 pp.; Vol. II, [ii] + 335 pp.; Vol. III, [ii] + 340 pp. Bound in original half morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised and gilt bands with contrasting maroon morocco title labels, gilt. All edges marbled, a little faded. Extremities worn and some scattered foxing throughout; otherwise a very good set. Binder's labels of T. Sowler, 4 St. Ann's Square, Manchester. Armourial bookplates of Robt. H. Alexander, Brandfold, Kent. Folded autographed letter from author, 1842 pasted on to second free endpaper (and signature, Vol. I only). Half titles removed by binder. First edition of the third novel title (following the success of Richelieu, 1829), a tale of the reign of Henry VIII, published by George Payne Rainsford James (1799-1860), popular writer of historical three decker novels. After army service in the Waterloo campaign, James went on to publish no less than sixty one novel titles. He later served in the diplomatic service in the US and in Venice. Copy from the library of Robert Henry Alexander (1838-1901), of Brandfold, Goudhurst. The house was demolished 1927-30.
