The title page appears to be from the larger Handbook of Folkestone, which first appeared in 1856 and in numerous subsequent editions, with title variations (Illustrated Handbook from c.1885). This edition of the Guide, which was probably also first published c1885. refers to the opening of the new harbour pier in 1904, but contains no reference to the First World War. The printing and publishing business of J. English, Ltd. in the High Street (a limited company by 1907) was continued by his son. (for details of the Handbooks see Goulden, Kent Town Guides, p.53-63, and for English (1827-97) see also Goulden, Biographical Dictionary...Book Trade in Kent, p.221).
