Small 8vo. 4.5 x 6.75 inches. [vii] + 160 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt with decorative border on front boards. All edges gilt. A little wear to extremities, hinges starting to crack, neatly repaired tear p. 21-22 and p. 160 browned; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 4 hand coloured plates and by engraved frontispiece and by 16 engravings in text, some whole page. (the figure of 'orchid pans' is called for at p.140, but is not present as this page is part of index and alphabetical list of species at the end). A text book of orchid culture with some attractive illustrations, by Frederick William Thomas Burbidge (1847-1905), plant collector and horticultural writer. After a period as a draughtsman at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, he worked on the staff of The Garden periodical and from 1877-79 carried out a plant collecting expedition in south east Asia, including Borneo. From 1880 he was Curator of the botanic gardens of Trinity College, Dublin, at Glasnevin. A scarce title.
