Oblong 4to. 7.75 x 11 inches. Bound in original grey blue cloth, with black titles and block of Flaxman on front board; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 37 pages of engraved plates, including title (36 plates with captions). Illustrations inspired by the early Greek poet, Hesiod (active between 750-650 BC). His Works and Days include here the myth of Pandora and the Theogony relates the birth of the gods. The composition of the drawings is by the sculptor and draughtsman, John Flaxman, R.A. (1755-1826), engraved by Charlotte Louise Soyer of Paris (active in the first half of the nineteenth century). An edition with the Flaxman illustrations, engraved by William Blake appeared in 1817 and with those by Soyer in 1845; this edition, however, may be later, perhaps 1879.
