Notes

Much information about stage coaching along the great roads of England during the 17th and 18th centuries. Includes discussions on the coaches, drivers, routes, inns, travel in different kinds of weather, horse-types, problems with equipment, etc. The chapters cover The Bath, Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover, York and Holyhead Roads. Perhaps the best known non-fiction work of the author, William Outram Tristram (1859-1915), with charming illustrations by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) and Herbert Railton (1857-1910). First published in quarto format 1888, this second edition is a volume in Macmillan's popular and decorative Cranford series.
