FIRST EDITION. TWO VOLUMES BOUND AS ONE. Small 8vo. 4.5 x 6.75 inches. Vol. I, [ii] + 394 pp.; Vol. II, [ii] + 362 pp. Vol. II has separate title page, pagination and register. Bound in original full calf with gilt borders; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt with contrasting morocco title labels, gilt. Endpapers and all edges marbled. A little wear to extremities and spotting of fly leaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Novel of domestic life which also includes a chapter relating a fight between smugglers and preventive men. A Dutch translation of this title was published in Amsterdam in 1856. Elizabeth Missing Sewell (1815-1906), of the Isle of Wight, was a novelist and author of educational and devotional works on Anglican principles.
