FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. viii + 261 pp. + 16 pp. publisher's lists. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with gilt block of arms on front board. Patterned endpapers. Spine sunned with a little wear at head and tail. 1888 signature of John L. Roget, Walmer Beach on front pastedown with photographic portrait in the form of a postage stamp pasted in below; opposite extract from Reading bookseller's catalogue tipped in. Illustrated by 4 folding maps in outline colour, including frontispiece. Decorated by title page vignette of arms. First edition of this useful history of the Cinque Ports confederation, including the two ancient towns, with accounts of the ports and their corporate and non-corporate members. A volume in Longmans Historic Towns series, by Montagu Burrows (1819-1905). After a naval career he became Chichele Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1862.
