FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xiv + 304 pp. Bound in original yellow cloth with black spine titles. Extremities worn and spine sunned with small chips at head and tail. Foxing throughout, but principally confined to edges and margins; otherwise a very good copy. Small stamp of Times Book Club on rear pastedown. Sections 1-61 are Fairy Tales and 61-137 are Legends, Myths, Jokes and Anecdotes. An English translation from the German, itself translated from the German by the compiler. First English edition of a work which brought Chinese folklore into the area of world folklore. Wolfram Eberhard (1909-89) studied Chinese in Berlin before his first visit to China in 1934. He taught at the University of Ankara, 1987-48 and was later Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley.
