8vo. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. viii + [4] + 14-267 pp. + 4 + 24 pp. publisher's catalogues, dated 1869. (although pagination irregular at beginning, all pages are present). Bound in original green cloth, gilt. Advertisement endpapers. Extremities quite worn, including head and tail of spine and board edges. Hinges starting to crack and some margin stains, but otherwise a very good copy. Walker's Select Library, 6, Myrtle Street, Liverpool label pasted on front board. Illustrated by 5 hand coloured illustrations, including frontispiece. Decorated by coloured title page vignette. Novel inspired by the events of a monetary panic in the City and the ensuing outcry against the Bill Discounters of the West End. William Douglas Jerrold (1826-84) was a journalist and playwright, who edited Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper from 1857. Attractively illustrated.
