Notes

A reprint, with modernised spelling, of six discourses on seamanship entitled A Dialogicall Discourse Concerning Marine Affaires Betweene The Highe Admirall and a Captaine att Sea, first published in 1634. Captain Nathaniel Butler (c.1577-1640?) was an English privateer who later served as Governor of Bermuda, 1619-22 and of Providence Island, 1638-40. The editor, William Gordon Perrin (1874-1931) served as Admiralty Librarian 1908-31 and was best known for his work on the history of flags.
