Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. xiv + 303 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. A little sunning of top edge, but otherwise, a very good copy. Illustrated by 8 pages of plates and throughout by scraperboard whole page and vignette figures, and by title page, other preliminaries and section heading vignettes. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A collection of the author's writings from a publishing career of some fifty years. It includes his nature and field sports writings, some uncollected newspaper and magazine articles, the text of his last work, 'Gone Away,' and a biographical memoir from material he supplied himself. At the end is a bibliography of his books with a list of other books illustrated by him. Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-90), naturalist, illustrator and children's author, was born in Northants, attended the Royal College of Art and taught at Rugby School for seventeen years from 1930. He wrote under the pseudonym 'B. B.' (a reference to the size of lead shot he favoured), but used his real name as illustrator. Edited by Tom Quinn (b.1956), author and editor of country and sporting magazines.
