Small neat signature on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The fourth novel of Irish writer, Edna O'Brien (b.1930), its subject is the plight of women living in a man's world and about everyone who lives by the pursuit of love. It follows The Country Girls of 1960 in relating the inner feelings of women and the sexual and social issues raised by their struggles for love and freedom. Her writings provoked great controversy in the repressed atmosphere of Ireland at this time and both were banned by sections of the catholic hierarchy. Notable dust wrapper by Lord Snowdon.
