The short rule of the deposed Emperor Napoleon, 1814-15, from his palace at Portoferraio, the island capital, is here covered only briefly in one chapter. Averil Mackenzie-Grieve (1903-75), who lived for a time in a villa on Elba, was a historian, novelist and illustrator of books with her wood engravings.
