8vo. 9.75 x 6 inches. 228 pp. Bound in original buff cloth, with brown titles, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has some edge wear, including chips at head of spine. A little wear to extremities, with a stain on lower edge just extending on to fore edge; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 17 pages of black and white plates, including frontispiece. Map endpapers. History and impressions of the Tuscan island of Elba,which also covers the small islands of the archipelago, including Montecristo. The short rule of the deposed Emperor Napoleon, 1814-15, from his palace at Portoferraio, the island capital, is here covered only briefly in one chapter. Averil Mackenzie-Grieve (1903-75), who lived for a time in a villa on Elba, was a historian, novelist and illustrator of books with her wood engravings.
