FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5,75 x 8.5 inches. 306 + [1] pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper, which has chips at head and tail of spine. Light wear to extremities and occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 2 pages of black and white photographic plates. First edition of the first volume of the Autobiography of Hungarian born British writer, Arthur Koestler (1905-83). It takes his story up to the time he joined the Communist Party in 1931. He resigned form the party in 1938 and published his famous ant-totalitarian novel, Darkness at Noon in 1940.
