FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.25 x 8 inches. 111 pp. In original blue cloth, with black titles, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge chips including head and tail of spine; otherwise a very good copy. January 1943 date on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 15 black and white plates, including portrait frontispiece. Fictionalised memoir of a fighter pilot who flew Hurricanes over France, in the Battle of Britain, 1940 and later in fighter sweeps over France. Wing Commander Ian Gleed (1916-1943), served in 87 Squadron, then flying Hurricanes. He was shot down in his Spitfire during the Tunisian campaign. John Strachey (1901-63) was a pre-war Communist and Left Book Club founder and author. He served in the RAF during the war and was adjutant of 87 Squadron before moving into public relations work for Bomber Command. A right wing Labour MP from 1945, he held ministerial office in the Attlee government. Scarce in dust wrapper.
