Item Description
8.5 x 5.5 inches. [iv] + 140pp illustrated with hand-coloured frontispiece and 28 hand-coloured plates designed by Rowlandson after Bunbury. The book is divided into two parts each with its own title page but the pagination is continuos. Bound in original half calf, sometime neatly rebacked. A remarkably clean and bright example. A satire on gentlemen horsemanship in the 18th Century. Rowlandson's reworking of Bunbury's earlier plates is magnificent in its accomplishment. This example is particularly nicely coloured. Podeschi in his catalogue of the Paul Mellon collection of books on the Horse, notes the earlier edition of this book (1808) has fewer plates (15) engraved by Dickinson after Bunbury and further says 'the edition illustrated by Rowlandson is the more desirable of the two'
