Originally published in parts, this is an early edition of the first volume (of four) and covers Jerusalem, Sicily, China, Japan, Asian islands, central Asia, Vancouver Island and Western Canada, etc. William Francis Ainsworth (1807-96) was a surgeon and geologist who later became an explorer of the near east and subsequently a travel writer and editor. He was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society.
