Synopsis

Being a selection of such passages in his life as have been most quaintly and strikingly narrated by chroniclers of the period, embellished with highly wrought miniatures and borderings selected from various illuminated mss., referring to events connected with english history.

Item Description

Small 4to. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. Fine papier-mache and plaster to imitate a Gothic carved wood-binding, spine rebacked in dark leather and lettered in gilt. [6] + 95 pp. + 2 pp Descriptive index + [1] page of adverts. Title page printed in red and black and the text printed in gothic type with chapter headings in red with decorated initial letters. The elaborate boards are in fine condition with only two very small chips to the extremities. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers with gilt inner dentelles. There is a very small marginal stain effecting the Title-page and next 3 leaves otherwise it is clean and well preserved throughout. Illustrated with 6 exceptionally fine cromlithographed plates with the edges of the text frequently decorated with wood engraved designs all printed by the Vizetelly Brothers. Only 1000 copies were printed and not all of them were bound in the elaborate papier-mache boards. This is considered to be one of Noel Humphreys's finest design achievements and is very hard to find in good condition. ABBEY LIFE 228. McLEAN. Victorian Book Design, p.104.
