Vol. I, [4] + xxvii +[i] + 382 pp (with additional pages 382 a - i); Vol. II, xii + 383-748 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrappers,with publisher's advertisements on rear, which have some staining and edge wear, including chips at head and tail of spine. Front hinges starting to crack, Vol. II; otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by 4 colour plates, including 2 frontispieces, 81 black and white plates, 30 maps, of which 9 are folding in colour or red and black, including one at end, by 74 text figures, including whole page and by head and tailpiece vignettes. Reprinted photographically from corrected sheets of the first edition of 1935. This lavishly illustrated title was the former standard history of the Anglo-Saxon period up to the year 899 and was praised for its use of archaeological, linguistic and pace name research. Robert Howard Hodgkin (1877-1951), came from a Quaker family, but took part in war service. He lectured in modern history at the University of Oxford, 1900-46.
