Vol. I, [2] + xli + [i] pp.; Parts 1-5, [ii] + 1020 pp. + [16] pp. Addenda, etc.; Vol. II, [2] + xlviii pp; Parts 6-10, 1021-2111 + [1] pp. + [18] pp. Addenda et Corrigenda. Main text in double columns. Bound in original half maroon morocco, gilt, over maroon cloth; spines in compartments with raised bands and gilt titles. Top edges gilt. Some wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good clean set. Armourial bookplates of William Frederick Geikie-Cobb, D.D. The ninth and still current edition of the standard ancient Greek-English Lexicon by Liddell and Scott, first published in 1843 and partly based on the work of earlier German lexicographers. This ninth edition of 1925-40 is still supplemented by additional material and revisions today. H. G. Liddell was the father of Alice Liddell, who inspired the titular character of Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland. This set was owned by William Frederick Geikie-Cobb (1857-1941), who was rector of St Ethelburga's, Bishopsgate, London from 1900. He was known for his willingness to remarry divorced couples.
