Notes

A survey of the mammals of the world, starting with domestic livestock, and then blending familiar animals with some of the exotic creatures discovered more recently. The Addenda illustrates the latest finds from New South Wales, 'The Wombach' and 'An amphibious animal,' (not yet named, but the platypus). This title, first published in 1790, proved very popular for its combination of Bewick's vigorous woodcuts with the descriptive text; and for its mixture of the well known (it being particularly thorough on British domestic livestock) with the stranger mammals of the southern continents. (Tattersfield, TB 1.5.)
