Notes

An introduction to Greek philosophy, published anonymously but known to be written by Caroline Frances Cornwallis (1786-1858). She was born in Wittersham, Kent, one of the daughters of the Vicar of Elham and Wittersham. She devoted herself to scholarship and learned many languages. After a brief residence in Italy she returned to Kent and lived in Goudhurst. Cornwallis wrote the majority of the titles in Pickering's 'Small Books on Great Subjects' and later made a name for herself as an advocate of women's emancipation, including the debate on married women's legal rights.
