8vo. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. viii + [ii] + 147 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper, which has some sunning and chips at head and tail of spine. A little wear to extremities and damp stain at top edge of front board; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 2 portrait plates. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Account of a Victorian high society scandal. Lady Susan Hamilton (1814-89) was a Scottish aristocrat, daughter of the 10th Duke of Hamilton and grandaughter of William Beckford of Fonthill. She married Lord Lincoln, Heir to the Duke of Newcastle, becoming Lady Lincoln. After giving birth to five children, 1834-45, she eloped abroad with Horatio Walpole. The subsequent scandal scandal and divorce even involved such eminent figures as Henry manning and W. G. Gladstone. Virginia Surtees (1917-2017) was an art historian and biographer.
